Steve Javiel

Artist Statement
I was born and raised in Los Angeles, but now live and work in San Francisco. Art
has always been a passion of mine; I’m trying to show the viewer that beauty can
be found in places that we ordinarily wouldn’t look.
Most of my work is non-representational due to the abstraction of color, shapes,
typography and forms of overlapping textures. Living in San Francisco has had a
major impact on my work. Decaying walls, shipyards, industrial sites, and abandoned
buildings have all been a big influence. The aging, rust and marks on these
surfaces are what I find fascinating and inspiring.
I tend to walk down by the Piers because I’m always guarantied to stumble across
a surface that will catch my eye’s attention. Every time I head out, I’m always
carrying my camera. I capture a variety of angles for a variety of compositions.
Once I have a strong selection of photography that I can work with, it’s back to
the studio to start painting.
The majority of my work is on canvas and varies in size. I enjoy working large and
small—large because it tends to catch the viewer’s attention and small because
it allows me to work on multiple paintings at once. I strive to create rich textured
surfaces using a variety of materials such as oil, acrylic, pumice, joint compound,
paper, old rusty screws and spray paint. In this way the urban textures are translated
into my painting surfaces.
