Last month Public Art Fund in New York opened Ai Weiwei’s citywide exhibition, . The project entails steel, fence-like architectural interventions and large-scale banners depicting photographs of Syrian refugees from the artist’s time in Lesbos, Greece. The exhibition is not alone in its use of domestic language to address global issues of mass forced migration. The 15th Istanbul Biennial, which concluded last week and was curated by Danish-Norwegian artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset, took the... [more]
Pluto, the former ninth planet of our solar system, discovered in 1930, was demoted to “dwarf planet” in 2006, breaking the hearts of 90s kids everywhere. The enduring interest in Pluto’s re/declassification was made evident this year, when several sites for space enthusiasts released stories stating that NASA had reinstated the celestial body to its former planetary status. As it turns out, the joke was not so far from reality: a recent proposal, led by Alan Stern, the principal investigator... [more]
On Sunday, Turkey will vote on a constitutional referendum, which threatens to expand the reach of the presidency. A “yes” () vote will bring more control into the hands of the current president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and his Justice and Development Party (AKP), strengthening the executive government and reducing remaining parliamentary powers. A “no” (hayir) vote rejects this expansion, but carries with it fears of governmental push-back, including the likely continuation of the current “state... [more]
It’s a decidedly vulnerable act many of us have experienced: the frantic search for something in your bag, bent over or on your knees in airport or a train station, personal articles spread out around you as you hunt for missing keys or passport, maybe trying to keep certain items hidden—tampons, condoms, echoes of bodies and sexuality deemed too personal for public exposure. Berlin-based artist Tanja Ostojić’s ongoing project , first performed in Zagreb in 2009, centers on a simple but... [more]

Awkwardness is arguably a failure in a relationship to the terms of interaction. In our hyper-mediated 21st century we live increasingly curated lives where each action or image is constructed for specific, often distinct, audiences. We have become skilled at navigating multiple modes of communication and mediated performance that resist the risks of connection. Cautious of the misstep, we compartmentalize to avoid the slip into reading from the wrong script, preaching to the wrong... [more]
The Revolution Before the Rehearsal: 13th Istanbul Biennial   Pick-button-f22fa879042524f5c7b8d2278b2983b8

To paraphrase Augusto Boal, art may not be the revolution but it is the rehearsal; in the case of the 13th Istanbul Biennial, however, the revolution arrived before the rehearsal. The Biennial’s focus, “the notion of the public domain as a political forum”, was announced in January, before the city it meant to take as both site and subject found more urgent occupiers with higher stakes. Fulya Erdemci who has curated past Biennials intended this year's “Mom, am I a Barbarian?” as a departure... [more]

Danyel Ferrari (lives in New York) ...For my thesis I am working on the second floor, in a room delineated by mid-twentieth century modular metal walls that were often used to construct managersʼ offices in industrial buildings. The project I had originally proposed involved performing a series of actions with objects, drawing on one of the MFA buildingʼs historic uses as a factory... [more]
