Works in moving image and sound
Video artist, short film and music maker, exploring what we perceive to be reality then presenting it as something completely different. Telling stories without words. Creating new types of narrative where interpretation is not influenced by explanation, and therefore left open to the viewer's own imagination.
Having started my creative life as a painter, and therefore concerned with the still image, my desire is to be able to stop any one of my films at any point and for that single frame to be good enough to stand on it’s own as a still image that wouldn’t look out of place if it were exhibited in a gallery.
After working on several narrative-based short films, I began to explore how the moving image works to complement the music of my alter ego 00 Newchair. These short films explore a different approach to narrative where the pictures, rather than words, tell the story. They take the form of multi-layered, reality-distorted voyages - illusory displacements of time and place that are atmospheric and often chaotic.
My work is centred on atmosphere and in this sense the ‘sublime’ features, but not necessarily in the Classical sense. For me, the ‘sublime’ is taking a journey through a landscape then turning it into a completely new sensory experience that challenges our perception of what is real and what is not.
Also, the inclusion of mirrored symmetry and kaleidoscopic abstractions of footage filmed from everyday life distorts time and space and opens up the possibility of multi-dimensional filmic universes.
My own version of video painting is called "Time and Tide" which is a series of beachscapes filmed from the edge of the sea. Time is then artificially curved as the tide washes towards the camera.
And in 2012 I originated, designed and curated Visioneca - a Festival of Experimental Film, held on Saturday 27th October at Freshwater Bay. A one-off day which demonstrated the extraordinary diversity and innovation in moving image development by 45 artists and film makers from 15 different countries.
My next collaborative project is MIST - Moving Image Sound and Things. MIST will project moving image in unusual places such as in forests, parks and on white cliffs as well as urban locations.
