Statement

My sculptures are composed with vitality and celebrate beauty. Their structures are composed with actual or implied kinetic properties aimed at exposing energized moments between connection and disconnection, as well as between strain and serenity.

Brad Howe seeks to build on the tradition of geometric abstraction and to sustain that tradition as a living, viable discourse. His freestanding sculptures, wall pieces and playful mobiles combine the dynamic planar relationships and solid coloration associated with post-cubist modernism. Their playful exuberance, however, owes more to the artistic climates of twenty-first century L.A. and São Paulo, where Howe initiated his artistic career. The humor, inventiveness, and versatility of Howe's artistic process are perfectly suited for the commissioned projects he works on. This is evidenced in the fact that the interplay between experimentation in the studio and the unique interests or needs of his private, and corporate clients serves as a vital source of inspiration. The external parameters that this sort of interaction poses, allows Howe to approach his process from ever-changing perspectives, and it allows his stainless steel, bronze or aluminum pieces to take unpredictable directions.

As a student of International Relations at Stanford University, Howe attended the University of São Paolo to specialize in Brazilian Affairs. It was there that he discovered the passion for art and architecture that would eventually lead to his first exhibitions. Since then, the largely autodidactic sculptor has met with overwhelming success. He has exhibited in over sixteen countries worldwide, and his works have been placed in collections throughout 32 countries, including most recently, an 80 foot mobile for the Georgia International Convention Center, an 18 foot stainless steel sculpture for a corporate client in Bilberach, Germany, as well as pieces for the City of Los Angeles, and MIT.
