Carlos de Lins
I was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and have lived in a number of cities worldwide.
At the moment I am working and living in London and in my current series of canvases entitled Linescapes I explore the relationship between modern city-dwellers and the giant concrete and glass edifices which delimit their horizons.
I have always been intrigued by the feelings of emptiness and desolation that can emanate from modern buildings. To many people such buildings are expensive but not very interesting; they tend to dominate and sterilise their environment. I often think that perhaps the human element is somehow missing.
I use drawing to articulate the idea of space and I use colour to create and set the atmosphere. Colour and form are deployed to provoke an emotional response.
By de-constructing and then re-constructing elements of my subject matter I am trying to evoke an idea of space: an idyllic space which allows the viewer’s imagination to break through.
