Statement

David Davies is a "self-taught" artist specializing in non-representational, expressive, abstract oil paintings and drawings.  Born in Toledo, OH, David graduated from The Ohio State University before moving to San Francisco in 1983.  Since then, he has worked for a variety of high-tech companies while continuing to develop himself as an artist.

Artist Statement

I am motivated most by the process of painting.  I spent years active in the high-tech explosion in the Bay Area and learned first hand how instinctive creativity can alter our perceptions and realities.  The realities possible today were once only “what if?” futuristic dreams.  These dreams became realities based on a process of exploration and experimentation, not unlike how I like to paint.

When I paint, the process I like to follow starts with a black and white expressive foundation establishing the basic shapes, forms, textures, depth, and movement desired.  This allows me to be most expressive, painting ‘wet-into-wet’ freely to help capture the creative spontaneity.  I then build on that initial expression, layer by layer, adding colors, additional surface textures, shapes, and depth.   While layering serves my aesthetic goals, I try to avoid altering the initial expression, leaving a more natural, organic quality and appearance.

Like our natural world, beauty is achieved through a chaotic, random blend of the living and organic, layered into a mosaic of forms, textures, and shapes that help form our perceptions. I like to use a pallet of natural, living colors in my paintings reflecting the abstract splendor of nature itself.

I feel true creativity is a spark that is rarely planned, that naturally leads to further reflection.  As a fellow artist once commented, my ‘DNA’ is that spark. It is as much responsible for the direction I follow when painting as are outside influences and the environment. What ends up on my canvas is a direct reflection of who I am.
