“The circle is the only shape that is simultaneously both whole and a part. The circle has no sides, it does not have limits. The symbol of the circle is used as metaphor for nothing and for everything, and endless parts in-between. We do not yet know the nature of what the circle is”.
Experimental and conceptual in nature, I work in the medium of sculpture, drawing and installation. The materials used are diverse, and often include combinations of the organic mixed with the machined or manufactured. Much of the work has primitive features, such as fabrication by slow, laborious processes. Materials are often left raw with intuitive markings. Subtraction of materials is emphasized along with a keen evidence of physics. References to cycles, memory and the subconscious are suggested, seeking to elicit a deeply contemplative response. Essentially, a number of interpretations are possible within the conceptual foundation.
Concentric rings and circles are prominent in my visual vocabulary combined with text, transparency and repetition. Classical Arabic enters my work through the mathematical principles it is based on and it’s exquisite form. At times, there are verses used from the Qur’an. The text is chosen intuitively. Its use is intended as a distinctive visual experience, not to promote religious or secular viewpoints. As a formal element, the calligraphic text intends to engage one visually rather than literally.
