Laura VanDuren / Biography

Laura VanDuren was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, which has a rich history rooted in the steel industry. After receiving her bachelor of fine arts with an emphasis in painting and illustration from Carnegie Mellon University, she chose to work as a ceramic sculptor for twenty years.  However, the desire to make larger work drove her to return to her “steel” roots by learning to weld and cast metal. Her mold making adventures with casting metal led her to experiment with resin, sugar, salt and any other medium that would cooperate. This adventure with multiple materials has been a passion that has been incorporated with her interest in engaging the public with interactive installations that invites them to take part in the completion of the art and become co-creators with her.

VanDuren has exhibited throughout California and the U.S. She is one of the founding members of Mercury 20 Gallery in the Oakland Art Murmur district. Her Oakland, California studio is located in the historical "Dome", an art studio community created by ceramic artist Peter Voulkos.
