Mariella Bisson


Born in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, Bisson learned to draw in a one-room schoolhouse in East Burke, VT.  She moved to New York City to earn a BFA in Drawing at Pratt Institute and lived in Brooklyn until 2001.  She and her husband have recently completed the construction of a new geothermal and solar home/studio in Woodstock, NY.

Bisson’s work has won grant support from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation in 1990 and again in 2014/2015; the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation; The Lenore Segan Visual Art Award from the Joyce Dutka Foundation; a fellowship from the Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation and one from Robert Rauschenberg’s Change Foundation. She is a winner of the 2012 NYFA Fellowship in Painting.

She has had solo exhibitions in several venues including  The Arsenal Gallery in NYC, The The Kentler International Drawing Space in Brooklyn, NY; The Feick Art Center at Green Mountain College in Poultney, VT; Elena Zang Gallery in Woodstock, NY; Gallery North Star in Grafton, VT and West Branch Gallery in Stowe, VT and the Olean Library Art Gallery, Olean, NY.

She has painted waterfall and geological sites in America, Europe and Canada while serving as Artist in Residence for programs including the Banff Centre for the Arts, Alberta, Canada where she has won the Leighton Fellowship twice; The Blue Mountain Center in the Adirondacks of New York; the Town of Breckenridge Tin Shop Residency in Colorado; The Vermont Studio Colony in Johnston, Vermont; Gelsenkirchen City Museum, Germany: Byrdcliffe in Woodstock, New York and The Hambidge Center for the Creative Arts in the northern mountains of Rabun Gap, Georgia.

Her works are in public collections including the Zimmerli Museum at Rutgers University; Gelsenkirchen City Museum, Germany; The Evelyn Lauder Breast Center at Sloan Kettering Hospital, Philip Morris Companies Inc.; White & Case LLP; Pfizer; Dunn & Bradstreet, PNG Gas Company of Pittsburgh, Talisman Energy in Pittsburgh and Standard & Poors.
