Walter W. Nelson
Sunrise Or Sunset Excursions
Led by Walter W. Nelson, founder of the Abiquiu Workshops. Each excursion takes a select group of photographers, painters, or naturalists to some of the most extraordinary and secret landscapes in the area. Each excursion lasts three to four hours and takes place early or late in the day, when the light is at its best. Full day rates are available.
–Tsiping, “Flaking Stone Mountain Pueblo.” High on a remote mesa above Abiquiu, reachable only by a steep, winding trail, lies the remote Tsiping, one of the largest prehistoric ruins in the U.S. Moderate hike.
–The White Place. Deep in a canyon beyond the Abiquiu valley lies the White Place. Strange rock formations eroding from pure white sandstone in the shapes of tents, pillars, chimneys, ribs, hobgoblins, and toadstools greet the eye in a surreal landscape. Easy to moderate.
–Pedernal Peak. Participants climb to the summit of Pedernal Peak, the mountain so beloved of Georgia O’Keeffe. The narrow top, where O’Keeffe’s ashes were scattered, presents one of the most spectacular views in the entire Southwest. A very steep, strenuous climb.
–Shrine Valley, Painted Mesa, Womb Canyon. This excursion explores the canyon and mesa country at the base of Pedernal Peak. You will see strange rock formations in brilliant reds and yellows, a gypsum mesa, and a bizarre, bright yellow slot canyon. Easy to moderate.
–The Heart of Copper Canyon. Cañon del Cobre, north of Abiquiu, presents a wilderness of arroyos, rock formations, red canyon walls, and other unusual landscape elements. Easy to moderate.
–Ghost Ranch and the Red Hills of Georgia O’Keeffe. On this excursion we explore Georgia O’Keeffe’s beloved Ghost Ranch, visiting many of the landscapes that O’Keeffe painted. Easy to moderate.
The Abiquiu Workshops will provide an iced cooler with soft drinks and bottled water. Participants must supply everything else and are urged to bring their common sense, as the landscape is rugged and unforgiving. Good hiking shoes, a hat, long pants, and a small day pack are recommended. The price for each excursion is a flat fee of $150 (with 1 to 3 participants) for 1/2 day or $300.00 full day. Includes transportation to and from your Abiquiu lodgings in Walter’s comfortable pickup truck. Special all day and custom excursions are also available to places like Christ in the Desert Monastery, the Black Place, Rio de los Frijoles, Copper Canyon, Tisiping, Jasper Ranch and to the top of Pedernal Mt. over looking the Piedra Lumbre (Ghost Ranch)Valley.
