Frances Young is a UK-based artist whose work incorporates moving image media, sound, installation, and photography.
Her work is often a process-led response to particular environments, and explores medium in relation to temporality; shifts and hybridisations across analogue and digital formats; and the interaction between sound and image.
Projects include: ‘Forever Is Over Again’ (2011 / 2012), a group of video works and digital prints arising from a three-month fellowship at Kala Art Institute (Berkeley, CA, USA). The project was supported by Arts Council England and Kala Art Institute.
‘Sites of Transition’ (2009 / 2010), is a group of video pieces which explore transition as process and subject, featuring work produced during a residency at the (now defunct) Experimental Television Center in Owego (NY), using voltage-controlled analogue modular systems.
Earlier work includes ‘Song of Farewell’ (2007), which uses slowed footage of starlings flying to and from a deserted roller coaster at dusk. The piece moves through a cycle of changing light; the structure of the roller coaster and the circular, repetitive flight patterns of the birds echoed by the rhythmic sound of vinyl end-static which loops through the piece: an ending without end.
Frances Young holds an MA in Fine Art from Wimbledon College of Art, University of the Arts London; and a BA in Fine Art from Bath School of Art & Design, Bath Spa. Her work has been screened and exhibited widely across Europe and the USA, including at Volta (Basel), Loop (Barcelona) and ARTE Video Night (Paris, France / worldwide broadcasts).
