Brief Biography

Canadian Artist Amy Shackleton (b.1986) has exhibited paintings in Canada, USA and the UK. A time-lapse video of her process has reached over one-million people, sparking international television interviews, magazine articles and extensive online coverage. Her work has appeared in the Huffington Post, Magenta Magazine, New York Magazine, Fashion Magazine, CBC, CBS, Gizmodo, My Modern Met and Oddity Central. Shackleton has received multiple grants to create/exhibit her work through the Ontario Arts Council. Her paintings adorn dozens of private and corporate collections across North America, including the Colart Collection in Montreal and the University of Cincinnati in Ohio. Shackleton holds a BFA Honours Degree from York University and is represented by the Elaine Fleck Gallery in Toronto.

Amy Shackleton envisions post-industrial worlds where sustainable relationships exist between man and the environment. Her paintings are intended to portray urban life at its best, demonstrating ways that we can work with nature rather than against it. By exploring the continually evolving approaches to preserving our environment and living more efficiently, Shackleton suggests how we can implement innovative solutions for city planning and development with minimal impact on surrounding habitats.

This synthesis of ideas is manifested in how Shackleton paints. As in real life construction, the architectural aspects of her work are calculated, measured and controlled in order to assure precise locations of each line. As in nature, the environmental elements are more spontaneous, unpredictable, liquid and organic. Shackleton has developed a unique technique to achieve these effects—she drips paint with squeeze bottles to build layers of organic lines (by spraying water and rapidly spinning each canvas) and straight lines (using patience and a level).
