Late into the night, after the first flush of events of a long weekend of performances in Chinatown for the annual Perform Now! festival, a small crowd lounged on the back patio of Human Resources, sipping the cool, fruity dregs of a welcomed sangria. Two musicians, Emily Lacy and an accompanying violist, Ezra Buchla (formerly of 'Gowns' and 'The Mae Shi') warmed up for a final set to the spare audience. Leaning back to hear the creak of the metal of my folding chair, I sat with my... [more]

Photograms are alive and well in Farrah Karapetian’s world.  Her Tragic Muse installation was composed of nine sheets of 8’x2’ photo paper pinned to the wall with roughly six-inch gaps between them.  The artist herself stands stiffly in the central panel, a contact print (the only non-photogram of the nine) from a negative roughly 2/3 her actual size (it makes one wonder how big negatives get); while friends/colleagues, in silhouettes both clear and blurred, bright whites sliding... Turn the corner here after the first batch of closely hung frames you see, and you enter the embodiment of density… density to the max, as it were. Stuffed fabric drips from the frosted glass of high windows, almost meeting – at their tips – the tops of slick red and black stalagmites propped on matching bases with plywood that reads things like "the bride", "debthead", and "skulldragged." Spelunking through this little ecosystem and the materials of which it is composed – nail polish, Formica,... [more]
Entering the Hammer lobby from the parking lot, I am met with whalesong. As I climb the stairs, the sound changes to the chirping of birds. In this aural perception, I am incorrect: in fact, the whalesong is a recording of birds slowed down 16x, and the birdsong is the sound of humpbacks sped up 16x. On the walls, as well, there are tricks: 2006 and Negative Space (STScI-PRC2007-41a) 2007 seem to me to be enlargements of microscopic photographs of skin tissue, disease, or something otherwise... HIV / AIDSSwarna Chitrakar(Song Lyrics to accompany image)Listen, everyone, pay attention. I would like to talk about HIV AIDSHIV came from the west & has infected hundreds in India. It is not an infectious disease. It spreads from 4 things:Using the same syringe for addiction, using the same syringe for injection; from pregnant HIV carrier women. Or having unprotected sex with 'infected' womenIn case these 4 things are taken care of, HIV will not occur. That is why I request the Doctors;... [more]
Chris Burden at Rockefeller Center   Fifth Avenue between 49th and 50th Streets, at the end of Rockefeller Center's Channel Gardens.   Flanked by Kenneth Cole to its left and Cole Haan to its right, on its own grey pedestal and lit with a truss of theatre lights from the tops of three neighboring rooftops, this 65 foot skyscraper is welcome company for the real scale structures of Rockefeller Center. It barely obscures (but definitely mirrors) the building directly across it on... [more]

More instructive than inspired, ICP's exhibition of recent photography and video from Japan takes as its burden several themes including the "the relationship of nature and the manmade world, the reexamination of Japanese tradition, personal identity as a form of costume play, and the role of the child as a cultural icon." These are honorable themes and the photographers have eyes that are by turns poetic, ironic, and frank. The show, though, exposes more the problematic... [more]
