Karolina Mikulska was born 1980 in Gdynia, Poland. She is currently living and working in Stockholm, Sweden.
Karolina began her career with studies in photography and later in the humanities. She has been painting for about ten years, starting with acryl and oils, and later developing her style to include a variety of different materials and techniques. She has during the last years taken part in a number of individual, group exhibitions and art events in Sweden, Norway, London, New York and Gothenburg.
Today Karolina primarily works with an abstract idiom and mixed media, using acryl, oils, charcoal, airbrush, cloth, collage and photographs.
“In my art I aim to dissolve the limits between photography, writing and painting by creating structures and shapes that can generate new ideas in the mind of the beholder. Working in the archives of the Swedish Royal Opera, which is one of the oldest archives of its kind in Europe, I found much inspiration in this extraordinary collection of artifacts from musical history. I use bits and pieces from old music magazines and used them as elements of an esthetic expression inspired by contemporary urban life. My art is to a large extent the result of a desire to playfully combine the old and the new, the structured and the spontaneous. At the same time, the paintings are my story, my poems, my vision, and something that stands for itself.”
