Statement/Biography

In my artwork I am interested in discovering transmuted spaces, places where energy shifts, changes, or renews itself. Through an exploration of the interstices between opposing elements such as nature and artifice, chaos and order, I wish to explore entropic systems where healing may occur. I want my audience to be confronted by a raw sense of what it means to be alive.

Biography:

Tobias Tovera is an American visual artist recognized for his work in painting and the sensory surrounds of his multi-media installations. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Tovera has had twelve solo and thirty-seven group exhibitions in the United States and Europe, with recent publication in Studio Journal Knock and Art Voices Magazine. He received his Bachelor of Fine Art in Sculpture from California College of the Arts in 2001 and studied painting in the Master of Fine Arts program at the San Francisco Art Institute in 2011. Tovera is the founder of the Ark Project and is an artist in residence alumni of the Performance Art Institute, Root Division, and Local Language Art.

'We expect art to give us a sense of connection to the world and ourselves. We expect nature to give us the same thing. Tovera’s work, in its embrace of entropy and fluidity, its references to and imitation of the natural world, plays on this parallel set of expectations. Are his paintings nature or art? Maybe they are both.'
