Polish native V5MT (aka Małgosia Woźnica) is one of the most beloved GIF artists working today. She creates work that resonates strongly with both the international new media community and the Tumblr generation of kids hungry for cool things to post on social media. Her art certainly feels like part of the net art zeitgeist, but is elevated above the pack by her flawless technical skills coupled with a wonderfully anarchic aesthetic identity. The name V5MT itself reflects the universal appeal of her art deriving from V5/MT which is “a region in the brain responsible for perception of motion.”
Woźnica never set out to be a Net Artist: “I was working in graphic design and just got attracted, at some point, to the animated stuff I saw on a Tumblr feed and simply knew I want to learn and make motion graphics myself.” Her prescient video piece floVV brought her wider attention at a time when the new wave of digital art was starting to explode. She was quickly welcomed into the burgeoning net art “scene” and feels she was “lucky to land among all the most noticeable artists, curators and other creatives active in the new media of today.” She adds: “that is something I appreciate a lot.”
The artist is quick to recognize that there are many “people with amazing skills producing super advanced gfx (graphical effects)” working in digital art today but also feels that, clichés and tropes have somewhat overwhelmed the community. This has only inspired her to push her work further: “There's still plenty of rough, poorly executed stuff, pretty much all the same, copying same ideas all over again, it’s hard to tell who did what. I must say I’m tired of seeing this ‘aesthetic,’ and I’m currently searching for inspiration somewhere else.”
V5MT states that her work is “always about experimenting, learning and showing some skills, and most of all, a personal satisfaction about the effect and the growing process.” We look forward to seeing where her experiments take her, and her work, in the future.
