Description

"Oye, Mira, y Calla" (Listen, look, and HUSH!)

This piece was inspired by childhood memories of Saturday afternoon domino games at my Tia Olga’s house in Hialeah, Florida.  It was a gathering place for the young and old of the family and neighborhood.

Hiding next to his father, a boy peers curiously over the domino table watching uncles, fathers, older cousins engage in the ritual activity – a game that brings together generations and serves as a meeting ground for sharing stories, jokes, insight, and observations on life. This was the place where a boy could access the wisdom of his abuelos and tios and connect with a social ritual from the old places and times.  An old Cuban song refrain titles this painting urging the youth to pay attention and listen to the older ones before their wisdom passes away with them.
