Since the company's foundation in Bregenz/Austria in 1989 and after its extension to Munich, Häusler Contemporary, i.e. Christa and Wolfgang Häusler and their team, develops and organises projects in the field of fine arts. The company's task area is divided into three parts: The array Projects/Art Consulting establishes connections between art and architecture. Häusler Contemporary evolves individual artistic concepts for various companies, based on architecture and corporate culture. Those projects are realized in cooperation with architects and artists in order to generate unique artworks - including some by James Turrell. He created an underground light corridor für the counterinsurance company Münchener Rück in 2001, the Skyspace Piz Uter for Hotel Castell in Zuoz/Switzerland in 2005 and he refilled the Pavilion of BMW in Munich with a lighting installation in 2006. Both young and already acclaimed artists belong as partners to Häusler Contemporary and that's how projects with artists like François Morellet (Generali Assurances, Munich, 2006), Brigitte Kowanz (DKV,Cologne) und Keith Sonnier (House of Worship: Saint Franciscus, Steyr, Austria) could be carried out.
Gallery, publishings and dealing in art take up the second area of Häusler Contemporary. Exhibitions with the gallery's artists take place at regular intervals, thus showing Hubert Kiecol, Jürgen Partenheimer, Roman Signer, Richard Allen Morris, Hamish Fulton or Sébastien de Ganay. Artists as curators are well-known at Häusler Contemporary. That way the awarded young artist Michael Schrattenthaler was able to introduce ten current positions of Munich-based artists to the gallery in 2006. Through their proximity and open-mindedness towards the potential of emerging artists, Häusler Contemporary ties vitalizing relations with the young art, using this pool for their spectacular projects. Due to those cooperations, young artists were perceived by a larger public.
The entire concept of Häusler Contemporary is completed by their mission of cultural management. In order to establish fine arts in companies as a valuable instrument of communication, Häusler Contemporary conceives custom-tailored programs for exhibitions, tutorials and events for the companies' clients and employees. Those projects are documented in cooperation with authors, photographers and publishers. Employees that might not be used to the uncommon sight of contemporary art get well prepared through courses of instruction and discussions. „The most difficult part of our work is at the same time the most beautiful challenge" illuminates Dr. Christa Häusler, „i.e. to arouse interest for artistic positions that are not anchored in a broad appreciation of art."
In March 2007, Häusler Contemporary moves into new rooms in Zurich's Stampfenbachstrasse 59. The conceptual design of the gallery drafted by James Turrell was realised by Swiss architect Silvio Schmed. This conscious handling of the gallery's space corresponds to the history of this place, in earlier times the showroom of Pablo Stähli, who, in 1981, presented the first exhibition showing Fischli/Weiss. For this reason, the gallery situated in the Stampfenbachstrasse 59 already is part of the newer history of arts. In their re-adaptation of the site, Häusler Contemporary is willing to tie up to those grand years and to reestablish the gallery as one of the hot spots on the Zurich art scene.
