Das Kleid , 21. Juni bis 30. Juli 2016
The social artwork THE DRESS consists out of a series of paintings, a participatory performance including embroidery, a film and photographs. All disciplines are equally important. The linen dress is at the heart of the project. It shows a prototypical, timeless, simple design. Besides the paintings, the workshop that takes place during ten Sunday afternoons is a central point of the project. Women are producing embroideries on the simple dress, in accordance with the traditional division of roles in different cultures. There are women from different cultural backgrounds and of different ages, women from Berlin and women who had to flee from their homelands, housewives and academics, women trained in handicrafts and women with hardly any experience of manual work, sitting together and working on the dress with almost no instruction. All women are wearing the same red dress while at work, to level out their origin and status. With the uniform red thread they will each act according to her own aesthetic feelings and her own manual skills. Each woman has to decide whether to use classical embroidery techniques or find new forms, to work abstract or to create images. She decides whether to tell her own story or to express dreams of the future. What has already been embroidered may be completed, responded to or even taken over. The embroidery is a means of communication between women of different native languages. After finishing the dress, each woman was photographed wearing it. The embroiderers thus become a piece of shared art history.A film is made to present the production of the dress. It includes the open outcome of the project: do the wishes expressed by the embroiderers come true, is the world really open to the young woman in the linen dress as the blue sky of her new Berlin home promises?
The larger series of paintings is the starting point of the project. It presents an unvarying composition of a woman in three-quarter view. She is wearing the original dress in front of a neutral background.
