Apoteka / Space for Contemporary Art
A p o t e k a is a new space for contemporary art opened in the old town Vodnjan (Istria, Croatia) in the space of an abandoned pharmacy.
Apoteka is a project room, where different exhibition formats and a variety of artistic media, positions and practices are made visible. Program is focused on research, promotion, understanding and presentation of contemporary art practices as a generator of new content, formed as an open and flexible structure, engaging different positions, issues and contexts into public discourse.
Apoteka aims to support and promote contemporary art in the local environment by international program of exhibitions and screenings and support Croatian artists.
Main program and research interests are based on presentation, communication, distribution and research of artist moving image.
Kabinet is the framework of 2013 programming – presenting a series of exhibitions, presentations and projections. Kabinet is a space for work and study, place of experimentation, open for artistic, curatorial, programming research. The Kabinet exhibitions are exploring the physical and symbolic potentiality of interiors, constructed spaces, by works of contemporary artists, opening up a new field of cultural visibility for contemporary artistic practice in local environment. It is also is our gesture of appreciation, awareness and an homage to the abandoned space of the pharmacy entrusted to us for temporary safekeeping by the Vodnjan Municipality.
Apoteka is a project space developed by Branka Bencic, independent curator and Matija Debeljuh, visual artist. Branka Bencic acts as artistic director and Matija Debeljuh Studio is located in Apoteka. The space is donated by the Vodnjan municipality.
