This year’s Evolution Festival brings to venues across Leeds an exceptional array of contemporary experimental video, film and sound media art from international artists. Now in its eighth year, run by Leeds based Lumen, Evolution has become an established leading event for media&technology art in the region.
This year the festival will launch with a bang on Wednesday 13th May, 6pm at Leeds Met Gallery – all welcome. Previews and highlights of the festival include work from international London based agencies Lux and The Projection Gallery, reflecting a rich selection of the best in experimental film and video work by artists such as Stephen Sutcliffe, Ursula Mayer, Sheena MacRae and Gunter Puller. Artist Lily Markiewicz presents an alternative series of films that explore the theme of ‘Journey’ and we show new and retrospective works by renown animator Barbel Neunauer and Brit filmmaker George Barber.
Technology & art innovators BASE present an evening of show and tell, inviting contributions from the public, and Northern Art Prize nominee Suki Chan exhibits her ‘Interval II’ video installation. There will also be technical workshops open to the public and a curators’ panel discussion event with the chance to meet representatives from the Burton Gallery, Castlefield Gallery, Leeds Met Gallery and the Projection Gallery. To close the festival we have a vibrant live performance sound-art club evening, named Avoid, with international performances from Mark Fell (UK) Lee Gamble (UK) Marinos Koutsomichalis (GK) Theo Burt (UK) and DJs, at Patrick St Studios, ESA.
