From the Black Arts Movement to the deserts of Santa Fe, to the core of Mexico, the kimono soul of Japan, the pulsating landscapes of New York City, the heart of America, Folk art traditions, the riffs of Jazz and the outer limits of the body - these are the artists that became synonymous with chashama in Harlem. They carried with them, to this common space, an amalgam of cultures, histories and media which distinguished each in a competitive world of creatives, and congealed them as a diverse artists collective. Alliances were built on these grounds, powerful artistic visions brought to life, tears shed, laughter shared, and a neighborhood both embracing and embraced. A lot of life has unfolded within these walls...
On this date chashama celebrates eight years in its Harlem location, with an exhibition and closing reception featuring the fourteen current artists-in-residence and recognizing chashama 461 alumni, community and friends.
