The Decatur Arts Alliance (DAA), in conjunction with the gallery at The Art Institute of Atlanta-Decatur, a branch of The Art Institute of Atlanta, is bringing the third edition of the juried exhibition, The Book as Art, to the AJC Decatur Book Festival. The exhibition is a visual component of the festival and the show’s dates, from July 24 through Sept. 18, bookend the festival dates of Sept. 4–6.

3.0 of The Book as Art again emphasizes the art form that can be a delight to the eye, a pleasure to the hand, and made tangible in forms that introduce us not only to new interpretations of an ancient concept but also to questions and ideas on 21st century form and format. This is an exhibition that has been described by critics as, “wildly eclectic” and finding “. . . new and often startling ways to reimagine not just the physical format of a book but also the ideological essence of the content.” (ArtsATL, “Year in Review,” Dec. 31, 2014); approaching “sheer aesthetic magic” (Jerry Cullum, ArtsATL, “Books Become Magical Objects, Aug. 28, 2013); and with examples that “. . .push boundaries and challenge expectations in ways that are both startling and exhilarating.” (Jeff Stafford, Burnaway, “Art as Books, Books as Art,” Aug. 25, 2014)

The Art Institute of Atlanta-Decatur’s gallery location on the square in downtown Decatur in the heart of the festival area is ideally accessible to the 85,000 attendees. The festival’s attendance testifies to the fact that books are cherished by multitudes in tangible and touchable form even as they morph into new forms and formats.

Jurors are Margot Ecke, Athens, GA; Arlyn Ende, Sewanee, TN; and Jeff Rathermel, Minneapolis, MN.

Decatur Arts Alliance is a nonprofit partnership of artists, business owners, residents and government dedicated to supporting and enhancing the arts in the City of Decatur. Founded in 1989, the Alliance sponsors the annual Decatur Arts Festival, is a founding sponsor of the AJC Decatur Book Festival, and in 2015 continues the success of The Book as Art as an event of the book festival. The DAA provides a collaborative environment to coordinate the interests of artists, gallery owners, theater groups, dance groups and performance venues within the city; and helps make Decatur home to a strong arts community. The Decatur Arts Alliance is supported by membership, along with proceeds from the Decatur Arts Festival and the Decatur Wine Festival.
