Galerie Kashya Hildebrand is pleased to present Jeffrey Aaronson’s most recent body of work in his second solo show in Switzerland.

The American photographer Jeffrey Aaronson undertook numerous journeys along the US-Mexican border, beginning at the Pacific, travelling through the southwest desert and ending at the Gulf of Mexico. The powerful images of BORDERLAND show us a hybrid world in which ‚border’ as abstract constructs find manifold manifestations and which therefore need to be constantly reconfirmed and questioned anew. Despite the great dangers involved, there are huge numbers of people coming from the south who try to break through the border to the promised land in the north day after day. Driven by the dream of a better life, illegal immigrants are willing to risk their lives to build up a new existence and identity in the United States. On the northern side of the border vigilantes and border patrols fearing for their own security and
cultural identity try to stop the continuous flow of people pressing north.

On his journey through small towns and seemingly empty deserts, Aaronson met a wide variety of people and the traces they left behind: people, who can only live and survive outside standard conventions, patriots, who feel their home is threatened, and immigrants, who try to set up a new life in a new country. For Aaronson, there is always an omnipresent sixth sense of Mexico.
