DESCRIPTION

Opening to the public on Sunday, June 2, will be Baton Rouge Gallery’s (“BRG”) “Under the Influence,” an exhibition featuring the work of 24 BRG Artist Members paired with a mentor, student or contemporary of theirs. This multimedia exhibition will shine light on the role these people play in the development of artists, allowing audiences a potentially deeper understanding of their work. “Under the Influence” will be on display at BRG through June 27, 2013 with no admission charges during normal gallery hours (12-6 p.m., Tuesday – Sunday).

A ‘First Wednesday’ Opening Reception will be held at the gallery, located inside BREC’s historic City Park (1515 Dalrymple Drive) to celebrate the exhibition on June 5, 2013 from 7 – 9 p.m. As always, ‘First Wednesday’ Opening Receptions are free and open to the public.

On Sunday, June 9, the gallery’s ARTiculate Artist Talk series will feature an intimate panel discussion with artists featured in the show. They will discuss both their works and the very idea of mentoring in the arts and its benefits and pitfalls. The discussion will also include a Q&A period. ARTiculate begins at 4 p.m. and is also free and open to the public.

Visitors to the “under the Influence” exhibition will be greeted by two dozen pairs of works, each including one work by a BRG artist member and one from an artist who either they influenced or were influenced by. Ranging from professors to students, relatives to colleagues, this collection of work allows audiences to contemplate the ways in which we are affected by those around us. Each pairing will be accompanied by a brief body of text written by the artist member that will allow visitors to learn more about the two artists’ relationship.

The artists who have been invited to show in this exhibition include artists whose work has appeared in some of the most respected institutions in the world such as the Guggenheim and Whitney (Paul Caponigro), the Photographers Gallery in London (Walt Cotten) and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Barse Miller). Additionally, the roster of invited artists also includes mid-career artists, recently graduated students, family members and more.
