Walter J. Phillips is undoubtedly a master watercolorist and pioneer of the colour woodblock in Canada. His works are collected nationally and internationally and can be found in the National Gallery of Canada, The Winnipeg Art Gallery, Glenbow Museum, Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies, Vancouver Art Gallery and The Pavilion Gallery in Winnipeg’s Assiniboine Park.

Loch Gallery is pleased to present several of Walter J. Phillips most significant woodblock
prints, including Summer Idyll; Jim King’s Wharf; Indian Days, Banff; and the iconic York Boat on Lake Winnipeg. At the same time we are proud to feature two of Phillips’ 1927 paintings, which were the basis for his subsequent woodcuts Floating Dock, Mamalilicoola and Mamalilicoola, British Columbia. From Alert Bay and Mamalilicoola to the Rockies, Lake of the Woods and Muskoka, we have curated an exhibition representative of Phillips’ preferred locales and subjects. We believe that both seasoned Phillips collectors and those newly discovering the work of this celebrated Canadian master will find this to be an exceptional exhibition.
