May hosted several soft-opening events in the summer of 2012, one of which was titled Audible Visible Volumes. AVV’s bill included two performances by local composers, musicians and dancers. Brita Everett and Seth Laucks collaboratively composed and performed Make Your Bed (17m55s), and Philippe Landry composed and performed Rail (11m48s). The two pieces were performed six times each over the course of three nights and drew in an estimated 250 to 300 audience members.
The sometimes somber but provocative and physically engaging performances filled the space with sounds of Lauck’s operatically trained vocals, the beat of stomping feet, and Landry’s poetic, cultural, soundscapes. Everett’s choreography interpreted Lauck’s composition with stylistic hints of butoh, ballet and modern dance. Her sole prop consisted of brightly colored sand piles used as a figurative and literal measure of time which she manipulates over the course of the performance.
Both pieces were recorded live and then edited by The Greenhouse Collective, a New Orleans based multi-media production company. On Friday April 5th, from 9:30 to 10:30 the newly published DVD will be screened continuously, followed by Djs Futuristic Mystic and Rotten Milk. Mexican food will be provided by Joel Malachi Brown. Limited edition and 1st edition DVD’s will be available for sale.
(Nicolas Sassoon - GREEN WAVES)
Nicolas Sassoon (b.1981, Marseille France) currently lives and works in Vancouver BC Canada. His upcoming solo exhibition at May gallery &
residency runs from April 12th through May 31st. The opening reception will take place from 7:30 to 10:30pm on Saint Claude Second Friday, April 12th. Additionally, May will be hosting a free and open to the public artist round table with local arts professionals on Saturday April 13th, 3:30 to 4:30pm.
Sassoon’s pixelated moving images display abstracted, minimalist interpretations of nature as well as reductive but literal snapshots of various, sometimes rugged and simplistic landscapes.
His installation at May gallery will be comprised of multiple super-scale (10 to 12 feet in hight and up to 50 feet wide) projected moving image “portals” accompanied by a minimalist soundscape composed by Sara Ludy. Additional sound performances will accompany Sassoon’s installation through the months of April and May.
This is the last exhibition of May gallery’s 2012-13 season.
