Sign Language, Notes from the High Desert
Sign Language, Notes from the High Desert showcases photographs taken specifically in the Antelope Valley by renowned southern California photographer Thomas McGovern. McGovern’s photographs celebrate the local vernacular style through documenting historic hand painted signs and murals in the public realm. McGovern is particularly interested in the minutia most often ignored or taken for granted in one’s community environment as it changes over time, especially as local architecture, hand painted signs and colorful communities are replaced by homogenous strip malls and master planned communities. This show is a preview of a larger solo exhibit at MOAH next autumn that will feature a wide ranging selection of McGovern’s photographs documenting the local places, people and issues of Southern California.
