In Conversation with Lynne Cooke
Barba playfully explores the physical characteristics of film and the structure of cinematic narrative. Central to the exhibition is a major new installation, Subconscious Society, which features footage of the East Kent coast, including the defence forts out to sea near the gallery.
Prompted by Lynne Cooke, Andrew Mellon Professor at the National Gallery of Art Washington, Barba reveals her creative approach to the medium of film, and reflects upon the experience of working in East Kent, exploring how Turner Contemporary's location in Margate impacted on the way in which she approached the exhibition.
Barba will also talk about the selection of perspective drawings by JMW Turner, which she chose to accompany her work, connecting Barba’s exploration of different viewing positions with Turner’s much earlier investigations, made when he was Professor of Perspective at the Royal Academy.
