DESCRIPTION

The iconic photographs from Jerry Uelsmann's celebrated career are given full range in this major retrospective organized by the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. Born in 1934, Uelsmann is considered a master of contemporary photography and a darkroom magician. His work is at once witty, dreamlike, mysterious, and provocative. The exhibit contains 90 of his photographs, including some never before exhibited. At the core of the show are many examples of his most famous technique: seamlessly fabricating photographs from apparently unrelated negatives, creating scenes both imaginary and intensely real. The exhibit is Uelsmann's first retrospective in 40 years, and also includes hand–bound books of his prints and a video of a 16 mm. film by Uelsmann.
