The Big Picture
Phoenix, AZ 85004
The photographs in Phoenix Art Museum’s collection, although relatively small in number, are each large in scale. These large-scale photographs, some as big as five by seven-and-a-half feet, are becoming a familiar sight in museums and art galleries, but the phenomena of really big photographic prints is fairly new. This exhibition will bring about ten of the Museum’s big photographs together for the first time. Although these photographic prints are typically displayed in contemporary art spaces in the Katz wing, where they are in conversation with artworks of many diverse media, this presentation will allow for comparisons and relationships to be drawn from one photograph to the next. The collection encompasses photographers working in a range of styles and approaches, including those creating constructions for the camera, those working in a directorial mode with a staged composition, those making portraits, and those working with landscapes and architecture in the tradition of straight photography.
