Mythologia - Gods, Heroes, and Monsters
The lives of ancient Greeks and Romans were profoundly shaped by the myths and stories they told about gods, heroes, monsters, and fantastical creatures. Long after these civilizations shed their ancient belief systems, their compelling myths persisted in the work of artists who drew inspiration from the rich classical narratives, adopting them to convey moral, ethical, and aesthetic lessons. Mythologia complements the major exhibition The Body Beautiful in Ancient Greece by exploring the use of Greek and Roman mythology in the graphic arts from the Renaissance to today. Featuring approximately 70 prints, drawings, and artists’ books, this exhibition will highlight work by old and modern masters including Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Max Klinger, Lovis Corinth, and Pablo Picasso, who all recognized the enduring power that resides in myth.
