House of Cards
1 Shanthi Road Studio/Gallery is pleased to present the work of Swapna Tamhane in an exhibition centred on troubling layers of exploitation in the name of economy. The city of Dubai becomes a starting point for an emblem of a future city that is simultaneously coming together and falling apart while being a vacuous, sterile environment in which no culture seems to exist.
Tamhane will show ‘Marigolds’, a short video filmed in Dubai in 2008. Marigolds are offerings that Hindus make after prayers or used in wedding celebrations. Tamhane happened to come across these marigolds in a river within the middle of the city; being an Islamic country, the tolerance for other religions is allowed due to the huge influx of South Indians (specifically Keralites and Tamil- ians) who have come to Dubai for construction work. This video is intended to work on two levels: the first, as a clumsy image of pretty flowers being pushed around by the water, and the second, as a conceptual comment on the current state of migration / immigration / trafficking in the name of economy and globalization. The second key piece in this exhibition is a wall drawing of the construction site around the Burj Dubai, however, the drawing will eventually be an abstract image distilled and removed from its context.
