We celebrate Opening Day for all kinds of events in sports, cinema, the theater, performing arts, etc., and today, January 12, is a very special day for art aficionados in and around the Canyon because it’s Opening Day for one of the premier visual art events in the area: Topanga Canyon Gallery’s 2012 Juried Open Show. The exhibit runs through Sunday, January 29, with the Artists’ Reception and awards ceremony scheduled for Sunday, January 22, 2-5 p.m.

In this annual year-opening exhibit, local artists of all types (except video and performance art) have competed against artists from as far away as Santa Barbara, San Diego and points east for inclusion—and awards—in what has become a highly prestigious event. This year, 52 talented artists juried into the show come from a more concentrated area: Topanga, Malibu, Santa Monica, the Westside, West Valley and Downtown. Winners of cash prizes ($300, $200, $100) and merchandise awards will be made at the Artists’ Reception.

One reason for the continuing popularity and quality of the Juried Open over the years has been a succession of highly qualified judges, and the gallery’s choice this year is no exception. Franklyn Liegel received his MFA in 1977 at Otis Art Institute, mentored by Emerson Woelffer, a revered teacher and award-winning artist himself. Liegel has been a faculty member at Otis College for three decades and at Art Center Night for 11 years. As a result, he is closely attuned to the local art scene, but he also enjoys impressive international credentials.

Today Marks Opening of Annual Juried Show at Topanga Canyon Gallery

He has exhibited his work at galleries and museums in the United States, Korea, Japan and Germany, as well as part of Art in the Embassies in Rabat, Morocco. His numerous prizes and awards include the Julia and David White Fellowship in Costa Rica, the Helene Foundation in Taos, New Mexico and the Award for Teaching Excellence from the New School for Social Research in New York City.

One student praised his teaching of art in this fashion: “His teaching held incredible insight regarding the process of making art. He values the individual journey that artists must take. In each one-on-one session within the classroom, both teacher and student are doubly blessed by walking together for a moment.”

You can view the exhibit at Topanga Canyon Gallery in Pine Tree Circle at 120 N. Topanga Canyon Blvd, Suite 109, Topanga, CA 90290. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
