April 10th, during CalArts MFA Open Studios 2011, I sat seated in front my studio door --all day and under the California sun, reading the instruction manual to the SP404 --then a new instrument of mine I'd been working on learning; and loudly playing music --abstract distortions as abstraction off its factory set beats. Tom (Lawson) smiling as he passed by to check out the studio. A group of us gathered he'd: "Whats going on here (?)" I'd respond: "I'm trying to get people to buy art... U"know, buy some work." Tom would laugh: "With music," --he'd correct himself: "Noise" now revealing a Scottish accent. I'd: "Yeah..." Furthering in light of skepticism: "not here though, cause u'know sound expanse --outwards ...it'll effect sells down buy the photostudios. Tom smiling with a grin: "Yeah, brainwashing... Affirming "Yeah, brainwashing!" And as he usually manages to do successfully --brief, he heads off. Escaping awkwardness, this situation --now, open studios and further bad graduate art.
