The Harpo Foundation Emerging Artist Fellowship Residency at the Santa Fe Art Institute is a prestigious, singular award established in 2013 to provide an emerging visual artist with strong artistic ability and an evolving practice, the space and time to explore ideas and start new projects in a residency context at a pivotal moment in their professional development.

This award is open to self-defined under-recognized visual artists who are over the age of 25 and not enrolled in a degree program at the time of the application deadline.

The annual Artist Fellow receives a one-month residency at the Santa Fe Art Institute, which includes:

  • a fully-furnished private room and bath
  • communal kitchen, dining room and lounge
  • semi-private studio space and shared work areas
  • basic tools and discounted use of MAKE Santa Fe facilities
  • access to exhibition/event space, contemporary art library, laundry facilities, and bicycles
  • basic foodstuffs
  • a $500 travel stipend

The semi-structured programming and unique environment at SFAI allows the HARPO Fellow to be as interactive or private as they wish with other residents. The HARPO Emerging Artist Fellowship is separate from and not beholden to engaging SFAI's annual residency theme, however, many of our past HARPO Fellows have embraced it as part of their residency.

The residency takes place between January and November 2018. What month the Fellow is in residence within that time period is based on availability of the Fellow and our institution, which we will determine what works best together through a conversation once we get to that point.

Costs include a $35 application fee. All materials, equipment, and other expenses are the responsibility of the Fellow.
