Ira Upin was born in Chicago in 1948 and received his MFA in Painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 1973. As a young graduate Upin's work became associated with the photo-realist trend of the time, "but," he writes, "for what ever reasons I didn’t feel comfortable being pigeonholed by the expectations of that trend. I continued forward over the years embracing and denying my ability to render realistic imagery." Upin has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across the United States and his work is held in numerous public and private collections. He lives and works in Philadelphia.
