With the opening of its world-class museum, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Zaha Hadid, Michigan State has emerged as one of a handful of university museums devoted to international contemporary art.

The exhibitions manager will join an energetic and professional group, led by the founding director, that develops and implements exhibitions and commissions of international scope. This is an extraordinary opportunity to be a key player in the creation of a new museum of contemporary art. The Broad Art Museum at MSU is unique among contemporary museums in that it possesses a historical collection dating back to Greek and Roman art. The museum's exhibition program will actively engage dialogues across the centuries with the benefit of this historical collection.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of having led the planning and implementation of exhibitions in a museum or gallery setting with a team of staff and contractors. The Exhibitions Manager will be responsible for developing and maintaining exhibition schedules, budgets, and working with curatorial, education, communications, operations, and security departments to manage all logistics of exhibitions, including overseeing tour details for travelling exhibitions.

  • Lead the planning and execution of exhibitions for display at the Museum, as well as any related touring components of such exhibitions.
  • Manage exhibition implementation onsite, including calling regular meetings, directing activities on the floor, and overseeing budgets. Review all invoices related to exhibitions submitted by staff. Troubleshoot any problems that arise during the course of the exhibition's installation and alert senior staff to any significant trade-offs.
  • Develop exhibition expense projections for exhibitions and propose deal structures/cost share scenarios. Ensure invoicing of participation fees is implemented properly and all payments are kept in accordance with the contract schedule.
  • Utilize project management best practices, such as detailed project schedules, exhibition calendars, budgets, and communication platforms, to ensure high-quality exhibition results, completing on time and on budget.
  • Liase with all stakeholders to be sure they are well represented and incorporated within a strong team environment. Ensure that meetings are called, and information is regularly shared as appropriate, to keep all stakeholders moving forward.
  • Hires and manages all exhibition related volunteers, temporary, and contract staff, including graphic designers, graphic installers, sign makers, art handlers, technicians, framers, etc.
  • In partnership with the curatorial staff, identify tour venues for assigned exhibitions. Send potential venues exhibitions information and follow up as needed. Act as primary point person for outside venues during exhibition tours.
  • In partnership with the University legal departments and museum registrarial department, develop exhibition and commission agreements and conduct negotiations with tour partners. Monitor contract issues throughout exhibition and installation to ensure contractual obligations are met.
  • Assist in the documentation of key processes and procedures, both for the department specifically, and working with other senior staff in development of museum procedures related to the functioning of the exhibition program.


Education and Training
  • B.A. in Museum Studies or Art History. Graduate level studies preferred. Coursework in Business Administration a plus.

Work Experience
  • A minimum of five years experience working in an Exhibition, or Exhibitions related department at a museum, gallery or foundation.

Skills and Abilities
  • Planning and project management skills, including budget management and financial management, such as developing and managing budgets in excess of $500,000.
  • Excellent organizational ability at the highest level, as well as detail oriented
  • Excellent communications skills both verbal and written
  • Experience negotiating and managing contracts and legal agreements.
  • Proven supervisory and leadership skills; a solutions-oriented, diplomatic problem solver and team player
  • Workflow and process documentation and technology and best practices experience a plus.
  • Ability to work with multiple, overlapping deadlines, identify priorities, delegate tasks to ensure project deadlines are met
  • Knowledge of 20th-century art a plus.
