DESCRIPTION

Western Exhibitions is a commercial gallery showing emerging artists who work in contemporary idioms. Begun in 2002 as a "portable gallery", director Scott Speh exercised all of the functions of an art gallery without a permanent bricks-and-mortar space. Western Exhibition moved into a three-room former factory space on Chicago's west side in 2004. The gallery has always focused on staging solo shows of gallery and non-gallery artists who are given complete freedom to realize their projects. Currently, the "Front Room" houses large solo shows, the "Plus Gallery" exhibits artist projects and thematic group shows and the "Drawing Room" presents works on paper and books.

Providing representation to a core group of artists from across the continental United States and Puerto Rico, Western Exhibitions exhibits work in a wide variety of media. Gallery artists fall into two broad categories: eccentric, analytical, image-based painting and conceptually-based installation and performance practices. We privilege no one aesthetic; what our program values first and foremost are artists who approach their work with keen and passionate intelligence.
