ArtSlant Prize Presents: Nick Vaughan and Jake Margolin, A MARRIAGE
Each month, one of the Juried Winners from the ArtSlant Prize Showcase Series is selected to exhibit in the Chicago Loop. We are very pleased to exhibit Nick Vaughan and Jake Margolin for the month of September. Opening today, September 12, Nick Vaughan and Jake Margolin's intricate map cutouts, monoprints and photographic documentation of their performance practices are on exhibit at ArtSlant's Pop-Up Loop exhibition space at 18 S. Wabash Ave. The opening runs from 5-8 PM at Carhartt Clothing. Drinks and conviviality provided. The exhibition will remain on view until October 1, 2013.
Husbands Nick Vaughan and Jake Margolin have been collaborating since 2007. They are currently working on “A MARRIAGE” a trilogy of installations that incorporate performance, sculpture, video, printmaking, and photography to explore their deep ambivalence towards ‘The American Dream’. The work shown here is drawn from A MARRIAGE: 1 (SUBURBIA) and A MARRIAGE: 2 (WEST-ER). These works look at tropes of ‘Western’ masculinity, images of utopic suburbia and the model of the ‘nuclear family’ through the lens of a generation of queer Americans to have grown up oxymoronically with a set of traditionally hetero-normative aspirations as insiders rather than “The Other”. The series of cut maps, inspired by anatomical dissections of human vascular systems, scaffold graphic information (personal, political, historical) over found road maps. The artists cut out everything within those images save the roadways and waterways, revealing the lace-paper vascular system of familiar geographies and the delicacy and integrity of those systems.
The sprayed acrylic monoprints are part of a series of 50 prints that use images that recur throughout A MARRIAGE: 1 (SUBURBIA); a same-sex nuclear family, suburban houses, a severe/inquisitive housewife, and a double self portrait inlaid with a map of Brooklyn, NY (the artist’s home). 20 Hours of Fox News (at the Panorama Motel, Granville, NY) is the timelapse document of one of a series of actions in which the artists read texts into clear plastic bags, capturing their breath in an abstraction of the volume of that text. Other installments in this series include all 13 days of testimony from Perry v Schwarzenegger (California’s ‘prop 8’ case) and the new and old testaments of the Holy Bible.
A MARRIAGE: 1 (SUBURBIA) was originally commissioned, developed, and produced at HERE through the HERE Artist Residency Program (HARP) in 2013. The first stage of A MARRIAGE: 2 (WEST-ER) will premier at Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center in March 2014.
Funding for A MARRIAGE: 1 (SUBURBIA) is provided through the MAP Fund, a program of Creative Capital, supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Additional support provided by mediaThe foundation, inc. Much of this work was created with studio support from Chashama.
