Lloyd Dobler Gallery is pleased to present Sweet Water, new paintings by Chicago based artist Carl Baratta. An artists' reception will be held Friday, March 2nd from 6-10pm. The exhibition continues through April 28th and is free and open to the public on Saturdays from 12-5pm.

Carl Baratta 's work depicts every scene within a moment of constant transition, creating a tension between the static image and dynamic narrative. Whether there is a figure sleeping, walking, dead, or dying, it is always to show an important moment just discovered in that figure 's psyche; a moment of transformation and unmasking. Every character is a self-lit doodle, visual pun, paint mistake, or popular culture reference trying desperately to shed light on its strange surroundings.

The new work in this exhibition employs tonal shifts from that of Fauvist painters fused with the blushing and constricting color of Moghul Miniatures. Baratta is constantly investigating different ways of compressing multiple events and moments into a single scene, a common conceit of manuscript, alchemy and Sienese imagery. His intention is to create drama within the construction of spatial shifts, clashing color palettes, nameless characters, and strange landscapes to construct an illusive environment.

Carl Baratta lives and works in Chicago. His work has been exhibited in the 2011 Venice Biennale. Selected group shows include West, Wester, Westest 2, Fecalface, San Fransisco, CA, 2011; Painter 's Paintings, Western Exhibitions, Chicago, 2010; Ox-Bow Centennial Exhibition, Grand Rapids Art Museum, MI, 2010; Big Youth, Corbett Vs. Dempsey, Chicago, 2009; and Explore your World, Roots and Culture Gallery, Chicago, 2006.
