UBS 12x12: Ann Toebbe
This October marks the end of the UBS 12 x 12 series before it evolves into the Chicago Works program in November. This series of consecutive small exhibitions occur monthly, coinciding with the MCA’s First Fridays open house series. While the MCA regularly integrates the work of emerging artists into its exhibition program, this project provides a forum for the many talented younger artists in Chicago who are at a crucial juncture in the development of their work. UBS 12 x 12 introduces these artists’ work to MCA visitors and stimulates awareness of and discussion surrounding these works within the larger art community. The fast-paced nature of the series is intended to open up the program -- and the vision -- of the MCA to provide a fresh, up-to-the-minute view of new and unfamiliar developments taking place in the studios of Chicago.
The final artist in our UBS 12 x 12 series is Ann Toebbe. Toebbe’s meticulously detailed paintings, collages, and drawings comprise a fascinating world of domestic interiors reconstructed from memory and depicted from multiple viewpoints. Her approach derives from Russian icon painting, medieval painting, Cubism, and folk art. Toebbe’s three large-scale works made of painted paper: The Doctor’s Wife, The Grocer’s Wife, and The Photo Engraver’s Wife, are based on conversations with her mother, mother-in-law, and step-mother-in-law which centered on fond memories of their childhood kitchens and the difficulties of being a wife and mother in the 1940s and 50s. With these works, the artist considers the role of women as homemakers and the ongoing centrality of the kitchen within domestic life.
