Lloyd Dobler Gallery is pleased to present their first solo show with Chicago based multi-media artist, Charles Mahaffee. The exhibition entitled Chorus will open with an artists’ reception on Friday, May 13th from 6-10pm and continue through Saturday, June 25th. Lloyd Dobler Gallery is open to the public on Saturdays from 12-5pm and by appointment.
Mahaffee will present repetitions through sound, drawing, and video and are designed to take communication and pummel it into incoherence. Statement after statement is distorted and re-organized only to be re-introduced through the interchange of different media based on a central theme. Sometimes quiet, sometimes screeching, they originate with some autobiographical intent, only to be drowned out in continuous static. The resulting confusion reveals one crucial obsession; that any conjecture, no matter how honest or eloquent, contains within it the blueprints of its own destruction.
Charles Mahaffee was born in Decatur, Georgia in 1980. He then attended LaGrange College in LaGrange, Georgia, completing a BA in Art in 2002. He lived in Atlanta until 2004 when he moved to Chicago to attend SAIC. He completed a BFA in 2005 and an MFA in 2007. Selected exhibition sites include Julius Caesar Gallery, Zrobili, and Gallery Uno. He has also preformed at The Op Shop, 1900 Gallery and other sites around Chicago, including musical performances with Ryan Richey as MARTHA. In September 2011 he will participate in the Thessaloniki Bienniale in Thessaloniki, Greece. He lives and works in Chicago.
