Chicago, IL, Saturday, April 2, 2011– ANDREW RAFACZ is pleased to present with COUNTRY CLUB | Los Angeles/Cincinnati, Abstract Location – featuring works by Steven Bankhead, Katarina Burin, Fritz Chesnut, Jacob Dyrenforth, Freeman and Lowe and Ryan McGinness. The show continues through May 14, 2011.
The artists featured in Abstract Location use abstraction and re-presentation as a way of examining the physical world. They offer up everyday experiences and images but in skewed and difficult to define spaces. The idea that all of our senses can provide ways to view, construct and deceive our logical thoughts drives their creative process. Whether it is a hallucinatory experience as in Ryan McGinness’ black hole painting, or Freeman and Lowe’s examination of fashion by literally blowing it up, these artists look externally for inspiration from abstracted forms and concepts.
STEVEN BANKHEAD presents three new works that play with the traditional idea of the frame. They collage together different pieces of paper, that he letter presses, draws on and paints with airbrush. A leitmotif of these drawings is the cartoon dust balls of a catfight, where the two animals start to brawl and their action turns into an abstracted ball of energy. Bankhead’s work was recently featured in a solo booth at NADA Art Fair in Miami. He has had solo shows at Andreas Binder Gallery in Munich, Circus Gallery and Emma Gray HQ in Los Angeles. Bankhead lives and works in Los Angeles.
KATARINA BURIN combines screen-printing with painting and drawing techniques, in this case, to re-contextualize images from matchbook covers focusing on an international selection of odd Modernist structures and designs. Promotional gifts from hotels and restaurants re-presented as a visual essay on leisure, commerce, advertising and painting. Burin lives and works in Berlin. She has held solo and group exhibitions in such venues as Andreas Grimm, NY/ Munich; Galerie Lucile Corty, Paris; China Art Objects, LA; Participant Inc., NY; Galerie Max Hetzler, Berlin; White Columns, NY.
FRITZ CHESNUT is well known for a dynamic series of photo-realist paintings of crowd scenes and performers that deal with fandom and idol worship. Chesnut’s move to abstract painting, though formally opposed to his previous work, similarly mines ideas of the transcendent and the sublime. Chesnut has had solo shows at Bellwether in NYC, and Country Club in Los Angeles and Cincinnati. His work has also exhibited White Columns, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, ARENA Gallery, the Dumbo Arts Center, in Buffalo at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, in Milan, Italy at Marella Arte Contemporanea. Chesnut lives and works in Los Angeles.
JACOB DYRENFORTH produces labor-intensive drawings depicting celebrity-obsessed stalkers and self-destructive rock stars – exploring the dark side of fame and the morbid curiosity brought on by tragedy. The works in this exhibition offer up a slanted perspective on the constructed identities and harsh realities of the music world. Dyrenforth's solo exhibitions include presentation at Renwick, NY; Sandroni Rey, Los Angeles; Wallspace, NY; 31 Grand Gallery, NY. Dyrenforth lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
FREEMAN AND LOWE have made a name for themselves making immersive hallucinogenic installations. Their shifting forms and distorted aesthetic jar the viewer’s concept of space and reality. They often employ narrative to their projects to transcend the viewer’s expectations of an everyday world.
