Claremont Graduate University, Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences, and five highly regarded undergraduate colleges—Pomona, Scripps, Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, and Pitzer colleges—comprise The Claremont Colleges, a consortium unique in American higher education. The School of the Arts and Humanities brings together art and music with English, cultural studies, history, and philosophy to create interdisciplinary programs that provide opportunities for

DEGREES & PROGRAMS
MFA Degrees: Digital Media, Drawing, Installation, Multimedia, New Genre, Painting, Performance, Photography, Sculpture
The degree requirements are in keeping with the recommendations of the CAA (College Art Association). The MFA Degree is a 60 unit degree accomplished in four semesters. Twenty-four units are in the Studio Practice field of concentration. Eight units are in Critical Theory, eight units in Art History, and four units in Writing/Thesis. The rest of the units are electives. Most students take the electives in studio art, but in the context of the full University, many other options are available.
The Claremont Graduate University admits only graduate students. Therefore, everything revolves around advanced work and theory. All energy is directed specifically towards the needs of an advanced level of practice.
How to Submit a CGU application
You have 3 choices:
1) You may apply online by completing the CGU online application Remember that you will need to mail all additional/supporting documents together in one large envelope to the Admissions Office – please write “ONLINE APPLICANT” on the exterior of the envelope to expedite your file’s processing.
2) You may request a paper application by contacting your academic department of interest. Click here to link to the University Directory.
3) You can print out the entire application which is available in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) for your convenience. When mailing your application to the Admissions Office, please mail all additional/supporting documents together in one large envelope.
The University owns and operates a few rooms and apartments on campus, however, the majority of students attending Claremont Graduate University (CGU) live in off-campus accommodations that are not owned by CGU. Graduate Art Studios
Each student at CGU normally gets an individual studio measuring 24 by 12 feet with light track and skylight. There are 63 such work spaces in the CGU Art Building along with shops, technical classrooms, four galleries, and lecture rooms. The building was designed as an activity and art-making center for the sole support of graduate work. All students have 24-hour access to the building and to their studios. Continuing students are encouraged to use their studios over the summer. All studios are open to view except during intensive individual work periods. Critics, curators and dealers tour the studios throughout the year. Faculty, visiting artists, speakers and colloquia artists meet with participants in the building and in their studios.
Digital Art Studio
Students at CGU work closely with instructors to gain a deep understanding of Video Art production, Web and Multimedia development, and 2D digital processes. Knowledge is gained through a combination of hands-on demonstration and individual training. CGU is dedicated in providing artists with the latest in digital technology and the skill to use it. The Digital Art Studio is an arena for the promotion of growth as an Artist and to provide unlimited possibilities toward advancing New Media.
Metal and Wood Shop
The CGU Art Department shop area includes a spray booth, welding area, woodworking area, resin booth, and sculpture yard. Most woodworking tools are available, including a radial arm saw, table saw, panel saw, chop saw, a planer, a joiner, drill press, 20" disk sander, 36" belt sander, scroll saw, and a large and small wood band saw. Metal facilities include a metal band saw, drill press, metal bender, mill, lathe, roller, bench grinders, chop saw, gas welders, and a mig welder.
