Deadline: May 31, 2012
February 1–28, 2013, SOMArts Cultural Center will present Mourning and Scars: 20 Years After the War, an exhibition about Salvadorian immigrant community issues around the 20th anniversary of the Peace Accords. Artwork proposals from professional and emerging Salvadorian artists living in the United States will be accepted until May 31, 2012.
Mourning and Scars: 20 Years After the War intends to trigger a reflection upon the cost of migrating to the United States, revise the history of El Salvador, and question and examine issues of community and culture, considering the following themes:
- The disappeared
- Adoptions of orphan children (due to war situations) by foreigners
- Change of identity
- Disabled veterans
- Bi-national or multinational responsibilities
- Broken families awaiting resolution and closure
Painting, drawings, video, photography and installations will be considered for selection as long as they clearly interact with the proposed themes and have potential to communicate with the audience.
Full proposals must include:
a. Artist resume
b. A thematic summary (based on the list of themes above) about your proposed artwork in approximately 200 words – explain your thematic choice, how it relates to you, the importance of creating a work of art with this theme, and your work relates to the issue of immigration and the Peace Accords signed in 1992 in El Salvador
c. A description of how you plan to communicate your theme to the public/audience (relationship between medium, theme and creative approach)
d. A sketch of the proposed artwork – this is a new work of art, in response to this particular exhibition (previously exhibited work is not accepted).
e. Estimated cost to produce the artwork
d. Send this information as a single PDF to the exhibition’s curator, Roxana Leiva at email@example.com. Please do not send original artworks as submissions.
