dr. julius | ap is pleased to announce the opening of "Criss Cross Straight Across" featuring the work of Don Voisine and Gilbert Hsiao, two painters from Brooklyn, New York. The title refers to structural and visual characteristics found in the works of both. The exhibition opens on June 27 and runs through August 17, 2013.

Don Voisine's paintings are characterized by the use of central rectangular or square expanses of black bordered by narrower bands of bright colors or white. Paint surfaces are smooth but not entirely uniform, as the artist plays with transparency and opacity by varying the densities of paint within the geometries of his picture plane. While there is a sense of subtle movement and passage within his work, Voisine creates a contained pictorial field while also emphasizing the object quality of the paintings.

As Roberta Smith noted in her recent New York Times review of his latest show in NY at McKenzie Fine Art, Voisine's dark geometries enact telling dramas of texture, shape, symmetry, color, edge and light  in effect, all of painting's grand illusions especially when given your undivided attention.

Don Voisine has been exhibiting his work nationally and internationally since the 1970s. Recent exhibitions include group shows at the National Academy Museum in New York, the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, CA, the Hôtel de Sauroy in Paris and Galerie Lindner in Vienna, as well as solo exhibitions at Alejandra von Hartz Gallery in Miami and Gregory Lind Gallery in San Francisco. He has been involved with dr. julius | ap since his participation in the international group show “FutureShock OneTwo” in 2012.

Gilbert Hsiao works with the physiological mechanism of sight which we all utilize to perceive the external world.

He makes work that, although physically static, appears to move between different kinds of space that have duration and, at times, speed. Raw experience takes the place of narrative, history, and interpretation.  Recently his investigations have led to work presented in unconventional lighting situations and expanded scale.

Hsiao is currently in residence at the Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation Space Program in Brooklyn and has been the recipient of a New York State Council on the Arts Fellowship. He has exhibited and is represented in collections in the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia and South America.

Exhibition venues include MOMA PS 1 [New York], Indianapolis Museum of Art, Contemporary Art Museum Houston, Mass MOCA [Massachusetts], White Columns [New York], Minus Space [Brooklyn], Gallerie Nara Roseler [Sao Paolo], IS Projects [Leiden], and Sydney Non Objective [Sydney]. "Criss Cross Straight Across" will be the second time he has been featured in an larger exhibition at dr julius | ap, following his solo show "Light Noise" from 2010.
