DESCRIPTION

The Appearence of Myths, Fairytales and Legends Today

Since the beginning, humanity has used myths, fairytales and legends to process their experiences with destiny and their imaginations of the world into tellable stories. An original and universal myth is utopia, the image of a perfectly organised human society with ideal living conditions. The dark side of this myth is dystopia, a world in which strict organisation leads to a system of totalitarian surveillance.

The myths and fairytales of Germany and Indonesia are despite of their existentially different cultures and traditions interlinked in numerous ways. Sometimes extremely complementary visions of utopia and dystopia occur.

Despite the huge cultural differences, the two countries have incredible merging points in artistic working methods. In history and context there are many surprising connections, which the artists seek to discover in their project. Following typical myths and symbols of their native country, the participating artists will translate their utopian and dystopian imaginations into paintings, objects and performances.
