Artist, performer, poet and author since the 1960s, Jimmie Durham invites viewers to the quite unique cosmos that is LATE LAST NIGHT (Ate Las Nigh) (At La Nit) (A A I!), where he has mounted five “combine sculptures” - made up partly of animal horns, wood and plastic pipes - onto the walls of a bizarre living room ensemble, complete with carpet, dark curtains and wallpaper. Oscillating between the uncanny and the humorous, in this exhibition Durham attempts to show a European interior life as might be imagined by Jean Cocteau mixed with Ingmar Bergman. It seems closer to a dream film-set than an art exhibition.
LATE LAST NIGHT will be Jimmie Durham’s first solo-exhibition at Galerie Opdahl’s Berlin branch. Most recently the artist curated a group exhibition here in 2008 with works by Björn O. Olsson, Angela Zurlo, Beata Fransson and Tova Mozard. In 2001 Galerie Opdahl presented Durham’s first solo-exhibition in Stavanger, Norway, and his second, Norwegian Woods, in 2007.
Jimmie Durham was born in the USA in 1940.
He has exhibited in venues around the world, including the Whitney Biennial (93 and 2005), Documenta IX, ICA London, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Antwerp and the Venice Biennale (1999,01,03,05), and the Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris, among many others.
Since returning to Europe in 1994, Durham’s work has focused primarily on the relationship between architecture, monumentality and national narratives. Publications on anti-architecture include among others: Der Verführer und der Steinerne Gast, Springer, Vienna, 1996; Between the Furniture and the Building: Between a Rock and a Hard Place, Walter Konig, Cologne, 1998. Durham is the author of numerous essays and in 1993 Kala Press published an anthology, A Certain Lack of Coherence. In 2005 Durham co-edited and wrote The American West, an attack on the mythology of the American West published for the exhibition of the same name at Compton Verney, UK. In 2009, on the occasion of Durham’s retrospective at the Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris, Pierres rejetées, a catalogue of Durham’s work in Europe was published.
Jimmie Durham arrived in Berlin on a DAAD grant in 1998.
