This is 5 Questions. This week we seek answers from Terrel Lozada
What are you trying to communicate with your work?
I hope that, through my work, my subconscious will communicate directly with yours.
I’m trying to convey the intensity and quiet stillness of the internal world. It is from
that place I pull up the invisible and make it visible.
What is an artist’s responsibility?
For me, it’s to live my life well. To flourish. To engage in a lifestyle that supports my
physical and emotional well-being and model that possibility to other artists who have
ingested the unspoken assumption in western society that artists—through some
alchemy of creativity and intellectual prowess—don’t need the basic comforts and
financial securities that contribute to a happy life for the rest of society.

Show us the greatest thing you ever made (art or not)?
The best thing I ever made is always still in the future! But this piece has always pleased
me: Torso, Cast bronze and 23k gold leaf, 51 x 17.5 x 16.5 inches, from the Walls of the
Body series. I’m fascinated by the similarity between being inside the metaphysical space
of the body and being within the physical space of a room. I use architectural structures as
a metaphor for the human form. Peering into a box shape and feeling visually contained
while losing all sense of scale gets me every time. In the photo, the sculpture is top lit—the
light is reflected by the gold as it moves down the center of the piece and is much brighter
when it exits the opening at the bottom. I use gold in my work to multiply light and to
represent the ultimate individual achievement: consciousness.
